Larder

Community Larder

Check out our community larder!

We are lucky enough to have one of two community larders on the island. One located in the Children’s centre in Castlebay and the second one here at the Gàradh!

Ours is located in the blue Bothan building with its own entrance. There is also a ramp to make it accessible for all.

F. A. Q.

What is a community larder?

A community larder accepts surplus fresh and frozen food from local businesses and ask the local community to take what can be used. The aim of a larder is to reduce food waste on the island, open for all and free of charge.

Who is funding this?

This project is funded by

  • Community Mental Health & Well Being Fund
  • Robertson’s trust

How does it work?

Donations are collected from Castlebay Co-op and offloaded and sorted in the Castlebay food larder. The donations are then split equally between both larders.

What’s the difference between a food larder and a food bank?

Food Larders accept surplus food from local businesses and encourage everyone to take what they will use at no charge, in an effort to reduce food waste.

Food Banks are available for those struggling financially and require urgent help with food supplies.
